Machine overview

The Makita 2030 is a vintage jointer planer made of mostly cast iron. What makes it special is that although it is a single machine, the jointer and planer elements are separate. This means you have no conversion time from one function to the other.

Separate Jointer and Planer Functions

On most modern jointer planers, both the jointer and the planer use the same cutterhead. On the Makita 2030, however, there are two cutterheads. These are driven by a single belt from a motor in the base of the machine.

The planer element is very similar to that of the bigger, industrial-grade Makita 2040, just smaller. The jointer is relatively thin, but with very long (1500mm) tables, making it excellent for edge jointing.

Other features

At 125kg the machine is very heavy, probably thanks to it being mostly made from cast iron. Its feed rate is quite high, making it less suitable for woods with difficult grain. However, there was also an extra sprocket set that could be changed to set the feed rate to a lower speed.

Replacement Blades: Finding replacement blades for the jointer of the 2030 is a bit difficult. There were some genuine blades for the jointer available via Amazon, but they seem to be unavailable now.

For the planer there are Freud blades, also on Amazon, that should fit the Makita 2030.

Machine Atlas Verdict

Interesting, solid machine that is great for people who don't need to face joint.

Quality

A

What we don't like

  • Jointer table is only suitable for edge jointing, not face jointing
  • Can be hard and/or expensive to find replacement parts

What we like

  • Heavy cast-iron machine
  • No setup time when switching between jointing and planing
  • Separate blades for jointing and planing mean longer blade life
  • Great build quality

  1. I can not get the table to adjust the depth. Whenever I try to lower the table something sticks. What do I need to do?

    • Hi Lowell, if it’s not been used for a long time it could be that the grease has all dried up or dirt makes it stick together. If you’re lucky some lubricant could get it loose, but otherwise you might need to disassemble the table and get rid of all the old grease and dirt.

      Hope that helps.

    • Are you looking to replace the rubber tires around them, or for the entire rollers? You can get your rollers refurbished by Western Roller.

If you’re looking for entirely new rollers, you can purchase them here. It’s part number 187. Do double check that it fits your particular model.

      Hope that helps!

  3. I can not find blades for my 2030 makita planer/ jointer. There are blades for the 2030n they are 1/2 inch too long. I read that there is a spiral cutter head to replace the original two blade cutter. Does anyone know if they truly exchange? They are pricey and does the motor handle them? I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on something that doesn’t work or will not work for a long time.

    • Cut down the 2030n blades work fine. They are a little wider than the originals but that just means they will take more sharpens. Cut down another set for the jointer. A bit wasteful but no other option.

  4. A couple questions about the Makita 2030:
    1. Any clues about how to get all four in-feed & out-feed rollers to the same height?
    2. What’s the purpose of the “extension guide” that comes in the little kit of extra equipment?
    3. What’s the purpose of the small machine screw threaded into the base next to the support leg under the out-feed table of the jointer?

    • Your rollers are deteriorating and decompsing. You can have the metal rods refurbished with new rubber and a better material than the original. You need a shop that does Rubber Volcanizing. There are many around So Cal as well as Seatle or anywhere they build airplanes and automobiles. Good luck.

  8. Looking for a magnetic switch to fit the Makita 2030n. Makita part is discontinued.

  9. There is a problem with my planer in that it doesn’t turn on. There’s power to the motor, so the switch is good. If I ground one of the brushes to the body, the motor spins. Is this a ground problem? The brushes are good.
