The Kity 1647 Jointer Planer is a relatively large machine for the hobbyist market.

One of the main positives about this machine is that it is one of the last to still be produced by Kity in France. Its successors (the 2636 and 2638) were produced in China by Scheppach and therefore are a bit hit and miss in terms of quality.

It has a dust hood attached, which swings upwards when converting to planing/thicknessing, and down again when jointing. This does mean the planing table has to be lowered every time you change back to jointing, which can be a minor annoyance.

In our experience, these larger machines tend to be more expensive on the second-hand market.

What we don't like

  • Need to lower the planer/thicknessing table to allow the fixed dust hood to sit when jointing
  • Relatively expensive on the second-hand market

What we like

  • The tables swing upwards and don’t lose their settings
  • Large capacity for a hobbyist machine
  • Sturdy and stable

  4. I have inherited a 1993 Kity 1647 Jointer Planer and am struggling to get the thicknesser feed to work. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem or how I might get it repaired if wear is the problem?
    Bryan

    • Hi Bryan, hard to say without a bit more information. Do the thickness rollers work at all? And are they slipping? Or are they not rotating at all? It could be that a cog wheel is broken (sometimes these are made of plastic), or that the belt that connects the rollers to the cutterhead is slipping. If you open up the machine you might be able to see if this is the case.

  5. What is the difference between the 1637 and 1647 Kity jointer/planers? Anybody know? They look pretty similar except for the color scheme.

  6. Long shot…. but I have a kity 1647 planer thicknesser and have used it for several years. Quite a workhorse, but it has suddenly decided not to start. I have put new capacitors on – which was the problem last time this happened but it has not solved the problem. Do you know of any service engineers in the Ipswich area who would be familiar with this machine?
