Machine overview

When you sign up, you can:

By

The DeWalt DW733 is a benchtop planer (also called lunchbox planer). It comes with two resharpenable blades, while its successor, the DW734, uses three disposable blades instead.

While the DW733 is no longer sold in North America, it is still widely available throughout Europe, where the DW734 is actually harder to come by.

Dust collection

Dust collection is not the best on this planer. The dust port is made from plastic and bolted onto the machine. Due to its design wood chips often clog up in the left part, meaning you have to completely unscrew it again to clean it. On the bigger DW735, DeWalt actually added a blower to spit the chips out so they can’t get stuck.

Machine Atlas Verdict

Solid machine that is a level above cheaper competitors, but still not without its faults.

What we don't like

  • Still quite heavy to move around every day
  • Dust collection not great
  • Only two blades in the cutterhead (vs 3 for the DW734)

What we like

  • Quite powerful, can handle any type of wood
  • Wider than most jointer planer alternatives
  • Can be transported due to low weight
  • Easy to store (if you fold up the feed tables)
  • Blades can be resharpened

  1. Can blades for 734 be used for dw733

    Robert DeAngelo
    • Hi Robert, I don’t think so. The 734 uses three disposable blades, while the 733 uses two resharpenable blades. On most machines I know those will have quite different shapes (different slots to secure them). So it is unlikely that they can be used on both machines.

      Hope that helps.
