The Scheppach HMS 1080 is a compact 10-inch (254mm) jointer planer. It is the larger version of the Scheppach HMS 850 and 860.
The HMS 1080 is quite powerful with its 1500 Watt motor. It is compact, but still has a good width capacity for planing and jointing, similar to more expensive machines like the Metabo HC 260. Add to that the low price, and what is not to like?
The build quality is not that great, with many parts being made from plastic. It is also very loud, because it does not have an induction motor, but a universal one, which is cheaper to make.
The biggest downside of the Scheppach and comparable China-made machines it that they cannot be adjusted finely. If you get unlucky and get a model that is not well-calibrated from the start, you will never be able to fix it yourself.
This holds especially for the jointer tables, which can be hard to put in a straight line. Whether or not you get a good model is therefore a bit of a lottery — if you get a decent one, it can be a fine machine for beginning woodworkers, but if not, you’re stuck with a poor machine.
Replacement Blades: If you’re looking for some new blades for the HMS 1080, you can find them on Amazon or on eBay (slightly cheaper).
Decent machine for a really good price, IF you get a well-calibrated model.
